22nd INTER-COUNTIES POLICE DOG TRIAL
Sunday 11th May
See Britain's top Police Dogs in action
Dogs have been used in one form or another to assist the police since the beginning of the 20th Century, but Police Dogs as we know them today were first introduced by Surrey Police in 1948.
Over the years many different breeds of dogs have been used, but it has always been found that the German Shepherd dog was the best breed for all round general purpose Police work. Labradors, spaniels & border collies are all used for specialist work such as searching for drugs and explosives.
The general purpose police dog has to be fearless sound of temperament and always reliable.
The exercises that will be on display at All About Dogs are known as the ‘Control exercises and the Criminal Work exercises.
In the ‘Control’ round the dogs will be expected to walk to heel closely on the handlers left side halting in the sit, stand and down positions, they will be expected to retrieve an object which will of the judges choice, carry out distance control, speak on command and stay on the down position for 10 minutes whilst the handler is out of sight. The ‘Control’ round will also include agility – 3ft hurdle. 9ft long jump and a 6ft scale.
For the ‘Criminal Work’ the dogs will have to chase a running criminal and detain him by holding onto his right arm, be called away from a running criminal and circle and bark at a criminal who has run away but stopped still before the dog has reached him. They will also have to detain a person armed with a gun who fires at the dog and handler and a ‘criminal who attacks the dog and handler with a stick.
